Free crochet pattern - Pretty Dolly baby girl hat

I love this hat pattern the most - the wool ply and the hook size work really well together to make a hat that sits just right. Once I start experimenting with smaller hooks for bigger hats I'm always slightly miffed that they come out just that little bit different.

This hat is super, super easy. One step up from a granny square, I swear! It's just instead of squares, you're working in circles. Simple double crochet stitches. Yay!

You can read my road to crochet dominance here... honestly, I taught myself from stuff I found on the internet. It really is that basic.

Once you nail the first few stitches, you can make anything. I've got so many ideas that I have to write them all down because I rarely get the actual time to make things!

If you're a beginner, this will explain the abbreviations, and this is helpful to explain what the stitches look like.

Anyhoo, this hat is for about 3-6 month baby heads. Veggie Baby is 8 months old in this pic so as you can see, it's a bit small for her.

You will need
4.5mm hook
2 balls 8 ply baby wool in contrasting colours.

Pattern:

1. ch 5, join to form ring.

2. ch 1, 10 dc in ring, sl st to join.

3 and 4. ch 1, 2 dc in same stitch, 2 dc in each stitch around, sl st to join.

5 - 13. ch 1, 1 dc in same stitch, 1 dc in each stitch all the way around. sl st to join. continue as long as you need to make the hat the depth you want. I did 9 rows.

14 (brim). ch 1, 2dc in same stitch. 2dc in each stitch around, sl st to join.

15. ch 1, 1 dc in same stitch. 1 dc in each stitch around, sl st to join.  extend for a wider brim.

16. In contrasting colour, ch 1, sc in same stitch. sc in each stitch around. sl st to join.

17. *hdc in first stitch, 2dc in next stitch, hdc in next stitch*. continue this pattern all the way around so you have a little wavy end to your brim.

I used this pattern. Very cute!

*oh and a word about copyright on this - I'm very grateful to the internet for teaching me and being a fount of sometimes-free knowledge, which helped a great deal. Do what you like with what you make from this pattern, including selling the hats if you'd like. Just don't sell my pattern, and it would be nice if you linked to me if you use it on your blog. But you don't have to :)

  1. This hat is absolutely adorable! When you master the bigger size (my girls are 2 and 4) let us know as I would love to make them one. Although I will have to work out how to read the pattern first.

  2. haha yeah it's like code! I have made various sized hats, but haven't written the patterns down for them yet. Keep an eye out for upcoming posts!
There should be a link in the post that explains the abbreviations. DC is double crochet, hdc is half double crochet and sl st is slip stitch xx

I want to make a HUGE granny square blanket so bad, but I gave up. Now I feel all inspired again.... Printer has been running hot, let's see how I go!! Love your blog, and ideas!! x

  14. Hey, question...the hat to the right of these comments the pink one with burgundy trim and flower, is that the same pattern as the one you gave us above?? I think it is but I can't really tell if there is a different stitch around the edge or not on the one pictured above....

  15. It's pretty much the same, just a little bit bigger. And for the trim, the contrasting colour is just the wavy part, not a row of single crochet in that colour, then the wavy part. I hope that makes sense... :)

  16. yes, that makes sense thanks...I also had another question. I'm working on the pattern above as my first project, other than just practicing stitches. I came to a problem though, I'm finding I need to "increase" the pattern instead of just doing 1 dc in each stitch all the way around repeatedly. My first attempt I was just crocheting in a tube like fashion...the opening of the hat could fit an 18 inch baby doll head, not a 6-9 month baby!! So my second attempt I did an increase after the 20 dc's. How does the hat get wider in your pattern without an increase??

  17. That's a very good question! I find if I make the top of the hat wide enough for the widest part of the head (the two rounds of 2dc in each stitch around is usually wide enough for me but it depends on the child's head), then it's a case of stitching rows only for depth. this part of the hat stretches to accommodate when you put the hat on.

I would find if you increased each round, you wouldn't have a fitted hat in quite the same way... but by all means, do whatever you're comfortable with!

  18. Well, thats prob. where I took a wrong turn then! Reading patterns is new to me... I did 1 round of 2dc stitches not two! I see now that that is 3. and 4. on the pattern...oops. Well I guess I'll be pulling it apart again. That's ok, it's how I learn. The two increases I did instead made the top too big as you said and the opening now was too wide. :) Thanks for your replies, they are very helpful and btw, your daughter is so cute!!! :)

  19. oh, and another thing...after your second round of dc stitches after the 10 dc ring, are the edges supposed to buckle?? I am finding my outside edge buckling or curling.. will this straighten out with the subsequent stitches?? Sorry for all the questions...

  20. haha maybe I should have written it clearer - but I have always learned the hard way too, I'm forever undoing stuff! You won't make that mistake again, I promise!

And to answer your other question, sometimes it does buckle, yes, but it straightens itself out when the other stitches are made, and when the hat is on the head. You could try changing your hook size if you like :)
