Veggie Meal Plan

Well, as happens occasionally, we only got through two of the meals on our list last week. We're nothing if not flexible!

So the rice, schnitzel and pizza are making a reappearance.

I've also been very conscious of making do and making things last lately. For no other reason than I think it's good practice. I'm so used to just getting things whenever I want now, instead of using what we already have. I never used to be like that - I was super-poor for years, and was always thinking thriftily and frugally. I guess it's normal to buy more when you have more, but it's not really in line with what I want out of life.

So this week I didn't buy anything on top of whatever we bought at the markets and supermarket last week. Except cat food, or the cat would have meowed us all stupid. We were absolutely never short of anything, but that didn't stop my itchy trigger finger wanting to just go and get stuff. While I never feel the urge to buy things, I am constantly fighting the battle to go and buy food. Just because I'm sick of looking at the same stuff in the fridge for a week, even though it more than meets our needs. BAD HABIT! Bad! Stop! It is so wasteful.

My number-one worst habit is letting my veggies go bad because I don't cook them in time. So I made a conscious effort to either blanch and freeze when I could see they were about to turn on me, I roasted a lot for the baby, and I made a lovely colcannon with some silverbeet that had seen better days. It was delicious.

Today is marketing and shopping again. I will buy consciously.

PS I was over at JustB yesterday, talking about tattoos and people's attitudes toward them. Feel free to check it out, if that's your thang.

I'm so hearing you on this! My partner and I (well, let's face it, mostly me - he's an "eat to fill the gap" kinda person) get halfway through the week and start dreaming of dinners that require more trips to the shops/ take away... which often means some of the veggies in the fridge go to waste. You're so right, it's just a habit and most of the time when we do commit to using the stuff we have up we come up with something really creative that tastes bloody awesome as well! Here's to "creative cooking" - a lovely reminder! x

  3. We're in the process of building a house, and with mortgage payments on top of rental payments we're finding we need to tighten our belts where we've not had to before. My main strategy in this regard is shopping our pantry and freezers, as they are both filled with enough food to get us through almost a month, with only fresh fruit and veggies to be purchased in the meantime.

I can see your blog and meal plans becoming very useful - while we're not vegetarian, I am not a huge fan of meat and so will be incorporating many of your meals into our lives.

  4. Just buy the fruits and veges for the week so that you can have them fresh. Plant some fresh vegetables in a pot, there are many ways you can have a garden and you can always make a compost for those rotten vegetables.

  5. Haha when I was poor, I ate so creatively! And came up with the coolest things. Now I just buy whatever I want in the moment. I wish I didn't love food so much sometimes :)

  8. Thank you, yes I do. I buy all my fresh fruit and veg every Sunday at the farmer's markets. My trouble is I buy too much.

And I do have a garden, I wrote about it last week... you might have missed it http://www.theveggiemama.com/2012/04/making-garden-from-styrofoam-containers.html
