About

Vegetarian, mama, sometimes-hat-crocheter, always a little loopy.

Veggie Mama came about when I was a small-town newspaper editor wishing I was writing about what I loved instead of council meetings and bank mergers. Blogging was the best way to keep track of all my kitchen experiments, and nobody was more surprised than me when people started to read. Not only read, but make my recipes also! It grew and evolved and now features photos of my impossibly cute kid wearing some kind of creation, some mum moments and other random bits and pieces of us trying to live a more environmentally friendly, eco-conscious lifestyle.

I'm no longer at that paper, I'm instead working at my dream job. And attempting to juggle it all, just like everybody else.

I became a vegetarian in 2006 after reading Fast Food Nation. It wasn't the book as such that made me make such a momentous decision, rather it tipped me over the edge. Being a veggie was something I'd thought of and dabbled in for many years. I wasn't comfortable supporting certain companies and practices financially, so eschewed them entirely. I understand these things are evolving, but I think I'll always be against those that seek to bring the consumer the cheapest option in the supermarket or fast food outlet, no matter the greater cost. I like a bit more consideration in my food.

Not being a fan of "hippy" food like lentils and tofu, I sought to make good food without creeping people out with weird ingredients and rubbery substances. I'm not here to preach to people what decisions to make regarding their ethical choices, but what I am here to do is show that vegetables, and veggie food can be accessible and delicious. If you want to eat less meat, do Meat-Free Mondays or just include more veggies in your diet, I hope I can help.

And to whoever said you don't make friends with salad... you were wrong ;)

nb: also fond of tea parties...
